Reasons Companies Use Twitter
As an assignment for a class at MATC, we needed to explain why two companies would use Twitter:
In the history of computer and communication technology, Twitter is a rather new concept and tool. Starbucks Coffee uses this tool to further its brand, communicate with customers and potential customers, advertise sales and deals, and in the words of their own statement, “Inspiring and nurturing the human spirit-one person, one cup, one neighborhood at a time.”

With 11.9 million followers for Starbucks, Twitter is able to get a message that the company wants to share with the public, instantaneously available. This is an incredibly strong medium for “speaking” with the public and even has the potential to be shared outside of their immediate influence through retweets. A company this large usually has a dedicated team operating, observing and planning their social media accounts. Being able to stay in constant contact with your target market helps to keep your brand on their minds. Their target market contains such a diverse set of people that Twitter makes an excellent form of information sharing. It includes all races, ages and genders with Starbucks specifically trying to be as open and liberal as possible in marketing and serving them. They also use Twitter to display and share concepts that they’re proud to let the public know about. For example, they’re currently working with @LoopFund (another Twitter handle for the group they’re partnered with) to create fully recyclable and compostable cups.
A different, yet similar strategy, is employed by the Elon Musk company, Tesla. The company is working on electric cars, giant batteries to retain energy, and solar power as a sustainable energy source to replace fossil fuels. With 2.52 million followers, they use Twitter to share their ideas and innovations with their followers and the public at large. They also use subsets of their company on separate Twitter accounts, such as SpaceX. As a company pushing the envelope of technology and innovation, they want to keep the public informed of their latest strategies and accomplishments. This keeps people excited about what they’re doing and can also increase public awareness and also add more investors. They also use their account to show their web page, where they advertise their new cars and products.
The ability to use instant mass communication on a daily basis has changed the world. Twitter and Facebook are two of the largest entities that operate this way. Just as Google has lead the way for search engines, Twitter and Facebook have lead the way for sharing and keeping in touch with each other and the companies we use each day.
