Why It's Worth Listening To People You Disagree With

Why it's worth listening to people you disagree with. https://www.ted.com/talks/zachary_r_wood_why_it_s_worth_listening_to_people_we_disagree_with Zachary R. Wood spoke about the advantages of listening to opposing views and learning from them. He has been subject to racism and elitism and still believes that there is something to learn from those views. He spoke about his upbringing and how it shaped who he had to be then and who he is now. His mother taught him to look at both sides because life is "complex, controversial and forever changing." Here are my thoughts on his talk and there's a lot to agree with. Life is complex. Issues that people consider black and white usually have a lot of gray in them. It's easy to pigeonhole those you disagree with, but it's hard to try to understand the issue from their viewpoint. Life is controversial. From abortion, nuclear disarmament, violence and/or nudity on television and interfaith marriage, to politics, r...

Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg and Congress

https://twit.tv/shows/this-week-in-tech/episodes/661?autostart=false - April 15, 2018 Episode 662 The tech talk panel of Leo Laporte, Jason Hiner and Lindsey Turrentine, along with Amy Webb via satellite, discussed Mark Zuckerberg appearing before Congress. It's been interesting to watch the way things have played out with Facebook in the last several weeks. The big news has been the policies of how information of people that use Facebook was used by outside companies and political entities. From CEO Mark Zuckerberf admitting that information was used by Cambridge Analytica to now appearing at Congressional hearings. The almost laughable part (if there is anything to laugh about) was the way Congressmen seemed very clueless on how Facebook, and even technology in general, actually works. From one Congressman asking Zuckerberg how they were able to make money and not understanding how advertisers in online apps works...to Orin Hatch asking if Facebook and Twitter were the same t...

Reasons Companies Use Twitter

As an assignment for a class at MATC, we needed to explain why two companies would use Twitter: In the history of computer and communication technology, Twitter is a rather new concept and tool. Starbucks Coffee uses this tool to further its brand, communicate with customers and potential customers, advertise sales and deals, and in the words of their own statement, “Inspiring and nurturing the human spirit-one person, one cup, one neighborhood at a time.” With 11.9 million followers for Starbucks, Twitter is able to get a message that the company wants to share with the public, instantaneously available. This is an incredibly strong medium for “speaking” with the public and even has the potential to be shared outside of their immediate influence through retweets. A company this large usually has a dedicated team operating, observing and planning their social media accounts. Being able to stay in constant contact with your target market helps to keep your brand on their minds....

Quantum Computing

Quantum Computing has been an interesting subject to me for quite a few years.   Whereas common digital computing requires that the data be encoded into binary digits (bits), each of which is always in one of two definite states (0 or 1), quantum computation uses quantum bits, which can be in superpositions of states. Although the idea of quantum computing has been hypothetical for quite a while, the actual development is just in its infancy. Quantum computing could theoretically work problems that standard computers can't solve. Quantum simulation could change the way problems are solved. Using quantum simulations can help to explain the expectations and behaviors of atoms. One of the things that must be overcome is pulse shaping. The ability to make sure the bandwidth doesn't increase past the bandwidth channel. If it does then distortion will occur. In trying to comprehend the idea of Superposition, Erwin Shrodinger proposed what is known as the Schrodinger's Cat th...

My C#, Logic and HTML5/CSS3 Classes So Far

The first month of classes had a sense of frustration to them. New computer languages, new concepts and new types of logic to learn. It's been an exciting month of learning and I've completely enjoyed it. This week I just completed writing a C# App demonstrating methods inside of methods inside of methods, with loops inside of loops inside of loops and passing variables and using arrays. Fun stuff! In Logic I wrote some pseudocode homework, used a few of the exercises to write them into actual C# code and then programmed them. What can I say? It's interesting which make it not feel like homework. Having fun learning keeps me wanting more. Lastly I've been working on my HTML5/CSS3 midterm project. It consists of creating a 5 page website and demonstrating the various things we've learned. I've decided to make a website called The Charity Drive and use it to point out some charities that have an international reach. At the same time, I'm using my home pa...

IT Studying Continues

It's been a week of OOP, Logic and HTML/CSS learning. Each subject gives a good foundation for IT and I'm enjoying them all. This semester is shaping up well, except that I just ruptured my right achilles and will need surgery soon. This limits my mobility and I'll be required to get help from friends and family to get to classes. Hopefully it won't slow things down too much. I'd rather stay ahead of the game for homework, assignment projects and reading.

Why I Am At MATC

My name is Bryan Madson and throughout my life I've gathered an eclectic mix of skills, hobbies and jobs. From landscaper to musician to volleyball player to actor to stay at home dad, I've been able to experience a lot of life. I've had the pleasure of traveling the world and sharing what I've learned with others. I've gotten to teach my daughters most of the skills they now possess, and have even been fortunate enough to share the stage with them. Technology is now a new journey in life for me and I have the desire to learn the language needed to understand it. I started taking classes at MATC over the summer and now I've committed my time to IT Mobile Applications because I believe that the future of communication and information will be done over mobile devices, and I want to keep up with what the world is sharing. I'm an actor and several years ago I owned a movie production company, DDI Films, LLC. I enjoy sharing stories with people through language...
